Catania and the Cyclops Riviera This tour gives you the chance to see the heart of Catania and its suburbs. Short trip through the city before reaching Porta Uzeda and the historic center. Agata, the patron saint of Catania, founded in 1094 and rebuilt after the earthquakes of 1169 and 1693, the Town Hall, via Crociferi, a street lined from beautiful baroque churches, via Etnea, the main street of the city where we will see Piazza Università, the baroque church of the Collegiata, Piazza Stesicoro with the ruins of a Roman amphitheater and a monument to Vincenzo Bellini. Enjoy free time to visit Villa Bellini (public garden) or for a walk in the main street before reaching your coach for the drive to Acicastello. This town takes its name from the volcanic stone castle from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Isole dei Ciclopi (the island of the Cyclops), enormous basalt formations which, according to Homer, were thrown by Polyphemus against Ulysses' ship. From Acicastello we continue towards Acireale passing through Acitrezza, a pleasant fishing village made famous by Giovanni Verga in his novel "I Malavoglia". In Acireale we will have time to admire the magnificent baroque facades of the Town Hall, the cathedral and the church of S. Sebastiano.
