City tour and Greek theater

Explore the pretty resort town of Taormina, considered by many to be the most beautiful place in Sicily. It is said that it was Taormina that attracted tourists to Sicily in the 18th and 19th centuries. A favorite retreat for artists, writers, actors and intellectuals, at the turn of the century Taormina became a popular vacation spot for high society families such as the Rothchilds, Krupps and Vanderbilts. Taormina is the ideal place for a walking tour: there are many easily accessible historical monuments to see. You will begin a walking tour with the opportunity to admire the ruins of the Roman Odeon, a small imperial-age theater perhaps used for rehearsals, the 15th century Palazzo Corvaja (outside) and the 17th century church of Santa Caterina. From here we will walk to the Greek Theater. Begun by the Greeks in the 4th-3rd century BC, the theater was expanded by the Romans a few centuries later and is now a close second to nearby Syracuse in terms of importance and size. Breathtaking view from the top! Free time for a stroll along Corso Umberto (main street) a wide range of jewellery, lace and craft shops, designer boutiques and souvenir stalls.
